CAMS NCP

Every day, the European Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) predicts air pollution levels across Europe for the next few days, through an ensemble of air quality models. Combining this forecast information with measurements at the surface, it also produces a corrected picture (known as the analysis) of what the air pollution was in the past. Both products are essential to inform local populations and mitigate negative impacts but remain limited by their resolution of 10 km.

In the frame of the CAMS National Collaboration Programme (CAMS NCP), which helps European countries make the most of Copernicus data, the BSC is working to make these air pollution maps more detailed. Using artificial intelligence combined with our knowledge of how the atmosphere behaves, we add local information such as detailed weather conditions and where pollution comes from (traffic, industry, heating, etc.) to refine this CAMS air quality data, currently down to a resolution of 5 km.
